We are a non-profit making organisation whose sole aim is to assist you to find out more about the district you live in, or if living at a distance and interested in our area, learn more.
Nuneaton is the most central town in England and has grown from a small community of 7660 in 1861 to a large conurbation joined with Bedworth a combined population of 120,000 today.
Most of this growth was based on the extensive range of industries we once had, coalmining, brick making, quarrying, weaving cotton, wool, silk, elastic webbing, synthetic materials and cloth, we made needles, machine tools, plant and equipment for brewing and mining. We made boots and shoes, military uniforms for the armed services, tailoring, underwear, cast iron products, castings for parts for cars, lorries and aircraft. Cardboard boxes and card products were manufactured along with snuff and foodstuffs such as flour, jam and animal feeds. We made sports goods such as tennis balls and footballs. Assemblies for the aircraft industries. Mattresses for beds, car and special vehicle body panels. Air conditioning equipment. Processed leather for clothing and shoes, concrete goods for the construction industry, mineral waters and at one time Nuneaton had a large brewery. We made ropes and machined parts for a vast array of trades. Attendant on these businesses was the means to get the goods and their employees around the district and further afield.
Attendant on these trades were the railways, canals and road transport businesses, and bus services.
So the canvas is large and we are here to remember and record it for posterity.
